The Advocacy Center Welcomes Maria Schaertel

Maria Schaertel began her involvement with The Advocacy Center nine years ago when she sought educational support for her child with a disability.   Maria says, “I found support, information, and a new vision for my child’s education and future. I encourage other parents and professionals to do the same. I greatly value creativity and tenacity.”

Ms. Schaertel
is also a graduate of the lay advocacy program and is a member of The Advocacy Center’s speakers bureau.  In addition to her experience with her own child, Maria has been an active member of Flower City Down Syndrome Network.  She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from
Carnegie Mellon University and a Writing Certificate from the University of Pittsburgh.  Her previous work in media relations will be an asset as she supports agency efforts in disability awareness and professional development services as Assistant Coordinator for Public Education.  Welcome, Maria!
