Funding Cuts to The Advocacy Center - Message from Paul Shew

PDF Sample advocacy letter to commissioner (PDF 13.62 Kb)

Dear Friend:

Today’s message comes at a time when The Advocacy Center has just received disturbing news about key funding.  The New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) has eliminated funding for our Advocacy and Public Education Programs.  This contract includes matching funds from the Monroe County Office of Mental Health that will be lost as well.

If you have ever called The Advocacy Center looking for assistance, received the help of an advocate, or attended one of our workshops or conferences, then you have been touched by these programs.

Now is your chance to show your support.

Our fact sheet at this link explains the details about this funding crisis and its impact.  Please read the information and consider writing to the Commissioner of OPWDD, Courtney Burke, to state why these programs are important and why the funding should be restored.  Please also consider sending a copy of your letter to your state legislators and Governor Andrew Cuomo.

You will find a sample letter attached to this news item.  In order to make your letter more powerful, please include information about your personal connection to these services, and why they are important.

I will continue to update you on this situation.  For now, we appreciate any support you can give us.

It is a privilege to work with you to create a world that works for everyone.

Kind regards,
Paul
